ParkinsonWISE Training

Saturday, April 13, 2019 10-12 noon

The Parkinson Association of Northern California and the Parkinson’s Support Group of Sonoma County (PSGSC) are partnering with Kaiser Permanente Neuroscience to provide education about Parkinson’s Disease to the fitness and wellness communities in our area. This is a 2 hour course called ParkinsonWISE Training. You will find a link to the brochure for further information. Please pass on this information to your medical personnel, personal trainers, instructors for yoga, tai chi, dance, cycling, boxing programs, providers of massage, music and voice. And, check our listing of those who have already completed the training.

We are celebrating four years of providing dance classes for people with Parkinson’s Disease, their partners, friends and caregivers.

Festivities from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Come ️celebrate️ with us!
Enjoy a short recital by dance class participants, refreshments & live music with 
Rob Ellis at the piano. There is also a little surprise️

Your support will help Dance for Parkinson’s continue its mission of bringing the joy of dance to the Parkinson’s community. If you are unable to attend this event but would like to donate, you can send a check payable to PSGSC (write Dance for Parkinson’s on the memo line). ANNOUNCEMENTS: 
1.   The Annual Meeting of PSGSC was held January 16, 2019, to elect our 2019 Board Of Directors. The following members are your elected Board for 2019:  Nancy Wilson, President/Chair; Marc Alexander, Vice Chair/Program Coordinator; Laurie Sutton, Treasurer, Barbara France, Secretary; Sandy Barrett,  Marie Kay Hansen, John Hamilton, Karen French, Mary Reed, Patrick Hardman and Cheryl Fox.

We want to thank (with a special celebration at our break time) those members leaving the Board after so  many years of service to PSGSC: Kathy Osbun, Sandy Grant, Ann Walker, and Art Rosenblum.

 
2. THREE SCHOLARSHIP OFFERINGS: One of the purposes of PSGSC is to promote activities which benefit the Parkinson's Community. We are particularly committed to advocating for the wellness of People with Parkinson's (PWP). The PSGSC Board has decided to extend our support to
  • LSVT-LOUD, a speech therapy program,
  • PARKINSON'S VOICE THERAPY (a program created by the Swain Center)
  • LSVT-BIG, a movement therapy program. 
  • All are designed for PWP given by trained and certified professionals. PSGSC has set aside limited tuition scholarship funding. Flyers will be available on the table at each meeting that explain the commitment involved in each program. We have revised the application form to make it easier to understand and fill out. Please let us know if you are interested, and we can get the process started for you.
     
3. ON-GOING CLASSES Come join one of our classes listed below:

  • DANCE FOR PARKINSON'S - Please note that we are now offering THREE classes per month!!
Our Parkinson's Support Group of Sonoma County sponsors a creative movement class modeled on the  Dance for PD program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. 

DAYS:    Every  SECOND, THIRD & FOURTH THURSDAYS of the month  
TIME:    1:30-2:30 p.m.    (Come early to get ready and stay for refreshments after)
PLACE:  THE ODD FELLOWS HALL (545 Pacific Ave. at Mendocino) Santa Rosa
COST:    Suggested  DONATION of $10 per class

  • PD SINGING CLASS 
Join us and have fun singing familiar songs from a variety of genres. We sing to live accompaniment. No  musical or vocal experience is necessary. 

DAYS:  Every First & Third Fridays of the month
TIME:   10:00-11:00 a.m.
PLACE:         THE ODD FELLOWS HALL (545 Pacific Ave. at Mendocino) Santa Rosa
COST:  Suggested DONATION of $5 per class

4.  FUNDRAISERS:
  • OLIVER'S MARKET:  Will contribute 3% of your purchases to PSGSC every time you shop and present an OLIVER'S COMMUNITY eScrip CARD. Applications are available at our meeting. All you have to do is turn in the paper to Oliver's Market and they will give you a card. 
  • AMAZONSMILE: If ordering from AMAZON, please consider signing up on AMAZONSMILE  then contribute to PSGSC for your AMAZON PURCHASES. 
  • TULIP PINS: The tulip is the symbol for PD. We have tulip pins selling for $5. They will be available at our meetings.
  • DANCE RECITAL: February 16, 2019, 2-4 p.m. at Odd Fellows Hall (545 Pacific, Santa Rosa). Recital by current participants, music & dancing. Refreshments. No charge. Adjacent Parking.

5. LIBRARY:
Don't forget to check our Library for new books/materials/clinical trials info/DVD's of past speakers/etc. If you  have any books checked out, please return them when you are finished. If you would like to volunteer to assist at the Library Table, please talk with Marie Kay Hansen.


6. DONATION JAR : We pass a Donation Jar at our general meetings. The donations help PSGSC pay for our meeting rental, storage space and mailing address at the church, plus speaker stipends, copying of  materials, dance/singing classes, scholarships, etc. We have NO dues or membership fees. Thanks for  your monthly donations!

7.  NEXT MEETING: MARCH 9 - Please note this is the SECOND SATURDAY IN MARCH.

We will have many helpful aids demonstrated, and some vehicles in the parking lot for you to  view.Please bring to share any aid you find useful in your daily life .
