March 18, 2015

Members Present:

Kathy Osbun, Sandy Grant, Art Rosenblum, John Hamilton, Marie Kay Hansen, Ed Brautman, Davida Brautman, Ann Walker, Nancy Wilson, Suzanne deKozan and Barbara France

Members Absent:

Dana May Casperson, David Getzoff and Marc Alexander

Call to Order:

The meeting of the Board of Directors of the Parkinson’s Support Group of Sonoma County (PSGSC) was called to order by Chair, Kathy Osbun at 10:00 a.m.

Approval of Minutes:

In discussion of PANC donation Kathy spoke to Nancy Kretz of PANC about the Memorandum of Understanding.

Under “walk-a-thon” The NPF walk in San Francisco will be held April 19 rather than the 15th as stated. The $91 contribution already made is from PSGSC members.

Under Oliver’s Community Card Sandy will report at the March meeting.

Under Adjournment, the date of the next Board meeting should be March 18, 2015.

Treasurer’s Report

Sandy Reported that the income up to February 15 included $383.30 Donation Jar, $225 donations in the name of Mike LeMole, $5.52 from sale of tulip pins and .49 interest. Total Income for the month was $619.31

Expenses were $500 grant to PANC, $136 Dance class expense, $152.99 Library expense, $200.00 mailbox rental, $50.00 meeting set up and take down, $27.00 Printing for General Meeting, $550 facilities rental . Total expenses for the month were $1615.99.

Art verified that all financial statements match bank statements.

Sandy continues to work on the budget. 79 Tulip pins remain

Sandy has found a printing company “So Co Printing” who do good work and give generous discounts to Non-Profits. All future larger printing jobs will be done through them. For smaller jobs like printing a limited number of fliers for meetings, etc Kathy has used Brick Station on Mission between Highway 12 and Summerfield. They give a 10% discount to non-Profits.

Don Winkle, our attorney is reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding PANC has submitted to us.

John checked out some electronics found in the closet at the Church. The small PA system needed $25.00 in repairs and John thought it would be useful in the break-out groups to help people who have difficulty speaking loud enough to be heard. The other item, a karaoke machine, he thought would be of little use to the group. When he investigated it he found that it cost about $400 new. He said he would be willing to sell it on Ebay for what he could get. Sandy made the motion to have John list the karaoke machine on Ebay. Suzanne seconded the motion which was passed on a voice vote.

Programs

Dance Class:
Nancy said that 40 people came to the first class and she thought it was very successful. Donations came to $311. Nancy said that Torri was amazed as it had taken their group in San Rafael much longer to reach this level of participation.

Singing Group:
The Singing Group will begin Friday March 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. Email reminders have been sent to the general mailing list.

Facilitators for April:
John, Suzanne and Ed will be available to facilitate break-out groups at the

April Meeting.
Outside Care Givers Support Group:

Marie Kay said that they did not have their last meeting due to illnesses and other commitments but everyone looks forward to the next meeting which will be at the East West Cafe on Summerfield. Contact Marie Kay for more information.

Publicity

Brochures: remember to check in places where they’ve been placed to see if they need to be refilled.

Library outreach for April Awareness Month: Marc has received materials from PDF and his committee is going to contact County Libraries to see if they will give space for a display of posters and brochures which will bring awareness to Parkinson’s Disease and our various activities.

Nancy has not been able to get something placed in the Press Democrat as yet, but she has a new contact that she will follow up on. She will be speaking to a Rotary Meeting about Parkinson’s Disease in the near future.

Suzanne mentioned how useful the Aware In Care kits are for PD patients. Kathy said that we had only one left and that we have been having difficulty getting more from NPF. Ann will check on trying to get more but in the meantime individuals can get one by emailing NPF themselves. Sandy said that she would send that information on an email blast so that members could try that on their own.

Data Base

110 attended the last meeting.

Fund raising:

Oliver’s: Sandy has signed PSGSC up for their program. When a person shows their community card Oliver’s will donate 3% to the participant’s chosen non-Profit. People will have to register. Sandy passed out registration forms to Board Members and said she would be mailing information out to the whole data base and there will be fliers available at the April meeting.

Gaia’s Garden Restaurant:
Kathy received an email from the Bard and the Balladeer, a musical duo that preforms in various venues around the bay area. They will be at Gaia’s Garden Restaurant on Sunday March 22, at 6 p.m. and they would like to donate their proceeds to PSGSC. The suggested donation is $20. Reservations should be made online. Kathy will go to check reservations and to have some of our brochures and fliers for upcoming events available.

Mary’s Pizza:
Wednesday April 8. Participants will need a coupon which will be available as a flier at the April meeting or can be downloaded from the PSGSC website. There will be a group sign-up to have lunch together in the back room which is reserved for PSGSC.

“Capturing Grace”:
Online tickets will be available soon for the April 15th showing at the

Cameo Theatre in St. Helena. The theatre has an email list which will receive notice and follow up emails will go out to our own data base as well.

“Ride With Larry”:
The movie will be shown at our regular meeting place on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. There was discussion about whether or not to have refreshments or rent a popcorn machine or have individual candy bars available for snacks. Kathy said she would talk to Marc when he returns.
We have fliers available for members to give to friends and family.

Johnny Garlic’s
: A May 7 date has been set. 25% of sales with a coupon will go to PSGSC.

Kathy will get the required paperwork to the restaurant. Last year we gave a portion of the Johnny Garlic’s proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and NPF but this year Kathy suggested that we use the proceeds to support the shortfalls for the Singing and Dancing Programs. Kathy suggested that we might wait until later in the year to discuss whether we want to write checks to NPF/ MJFF when we have a better sense of our financial situation with the singing and dance classes.

Again this will be publicized by announcements and coupons both online and available at meetings.

Wine & Canvas:
Davida said that the wine and canvas events need to be scheduled much in advance of the desired date. It was decided that Davida would see if she could schedule it for our November meeting. The Wine and Canvas event will be for those who wish to participate and will take place while the rest of the members will be in their break out groups. There will still be a speaker during the first hour.

Clinical Trails

Kathy received communication from Janene Grippi, a student at SSU. She is involved in a project that is investigating wearable technology to record tremors which they hope will help to provide objective information to physicians who can use it to adjust medication dosage for maximum effectiveness.

Janene is looking for participants in the project. The question is if this is something that we would want to pass on to our membership. After discussion the consensus was that we would send the information out as received from Janene with the disclaimer that it was for the member’s information only and it is not a PSGSC sponsored project. Sandy made a motion so stating and Davida seconded this motion. The motion passed on voice vote with one abstention.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 p.m. by Chair, Kathy Osbun. The next Board meeting will be Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Brush Creek Senior Living.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara France, Recording Secretary.
